Maybe the driver is not the cause, after all? Note that I now have a Mach64 graphics card installed in a 64-bit slot. I don't think that's having any effect on this problem, but I'll try it again without the graphics card when I get a chance. Another data point: I am able to boot from the NetBSD 3.1 installation disk.
