We ended up with a very aggressive and belligerent programmer who left us but left us some nasty little bugs behind to really screw us up.. who we now can't find.

It also started trying to access other sites which we only found out about this when our site crashed and we got compalints our from our ISP that our server was trying to agressively access other servers out there on the net.

First and foremost - you are speaking some very harsh words. Words that
could be considered as liable. And now that you have made those "claims"
in a public forum, you may wish to seek legal advice.

Secondly - search the FreeBSD site on how to change the root password.
It's there. If you know the password, login and change it yourself via
passwd.

If you don't - do as I said - you will find the answer there.
