This sort of confusion is exactly what I had hoped to avoid by including in my original posting the following lines from kernel initialization and the xorg.0.log file. pci0: <ACPI PCI bus> on pcib0 agp0: <Intel 82865 host to AGP bridge> mem 0xf0000000-0xf7ffffff at device 0.0 on pci0 pcib1: <ACPI PCI-PCI bridge> at device 1.0 on pci0 pci1: <ACPI PCI bus> on pcib1 drm0: <ATI Radeon JN R420 Mobility M18> port 0xc000-0xc0ff mem 0xe0000000-0xefffffff,0xfcff0000-0xfcffffff irq 16 at device 0.0 on pci1 info: [drm] AGP at 0xf0000000 128MB info: [drm] Initialized radeon 1.25.0 20060524 (II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0 (--) Chipset ATI Radeon Mobility 9800 (M18) JN (AGP) found > >All of the 9800 variants that I see are treated as R350. > Okay, that's good. I am completely clueless as to what the differences might be between an R350 and an R420/M18, nor do I have any idea of the significance of "JN" in the above identification messages. If the R350 code in the r300 driver will work right, that's good enough for now, even if it might not take full advantage of the differences between the different chip models. Thanks again to all who have replied. I'll give it a go. Scott Bennett, Comm.
