The wolf3d script chdirs before starting the executable to
/usr/X11R6/libexec/wolf3. This file is read only for most users.
The player files are written to this directory, which fails.

change the script to chdir to ${HOME}/.wolf3d, make the necessary
symlinks from /usr/X11R6/libexec/wolf3d and start the game from
here. That way the saved games are safely stored.
