The little message never got triggered, even when xl0 failed to attach, so I did a little more digging. It turns out that when xl0 doesn't attach, some other items on the PCI bus aren't attaching either. So, it doesn't look like it's the xl driver's fault. Sorry for the false alarm. I set thing thing up for verbose boot, and as soon as I get a few minutes free I'll analyze the good vs. bad dmesg.boot's and report my findings on -current.
