A while back I had tinkered with building/installing gcc 3.  Thought I had
cleaned up everything, but unfortunately, some ports were configuring with
the object dir I had used for the build as part of the ldconfig path, which
wreaked total havoc.

Looks like all is well now.  Sorry for the needless noise.
