As I was pointed a few months back, maxdsiz is not in any way related to the amount of RAM you have. You can have 256MB of RAM, and it'll also be 512MB, it's just the upper limit of the memory a process can allocate. I have a few servers with 512MB of ram where maxdsiz is more than 1GB. (Of course, you need the right amount of RAM+Swap for it to allocate all it needs.)
