I'm not sure if FreeBSD imposes such strict limitations > on shell for root , but it's quite possible IMHO I figured out what was wrong. Looking in the passwd file the root shell had gotten changed. I didn't use the chpass command correctly. It was simple to fix once I knew what I had done wrong. Thanks all for the help dave
