Subject: Local sshd not accepting connections

I recently helped a friend setup a 4.4-STABLE box. I can use ssh to connect to
his machine with no problems, but if I connect to his box and try to connect
back to my own machine via ssh, I get the following message:

ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host

His machine is on a local subnet behind a router. His setup looks like this:

BSD box -- IP address 192.168.1.100
        |
        |
        --> router -- gateway address 192.168.1.1
                      external address x.x.x.x
                              |
                              |
                              --> to outside world

Could this be contributing to the problem? Also, the hostname he set on the
box doesn't correspond to any externally resolvable address. On top of that,
his router's external address is obtained from his ISP using DHCP, and changes
quite often.

Any clues as to where the problem may be would be greatly appreciated.
