Samba has different parameters you can set to deal with character sets.
"character set", "client code page", "coding system" and "valid chars".
Chapter 8 of the "Samba book" has all the details.
The "Samba book" is included with the newer Samba source distributions. If
you don't have it, you can download the PDF version from the O'Reilly ftp
site.

I did the download with "wget"

wget -l2 --timestamping --tries=3D10  ftp://ftp.ora.com/pub/examples/misc/s=
amba/*
