I have the same problem with seti@home connections
I have a solution that helps out.  A work unit caching server like
setiqueue.  But so far I can only find it for windows.  I have it running
now at http://seti.kibserv.org:5517
all you have to do to use a server like this add the following to your
command line:
-proxy address:port
