Grab the ATAPI CDROM documentation (SFF-8020, available from fission.dt.wdc.com IIRC), and apply yourself to sys/i386/isa/wdc.c. You can build it as an LKM, which will make your life debugging somehat easier (as you can load/unload it without rebooting).
