If the follow-up messages are sent to freebsd-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.org, with the PR category and number in the subject, they appear in the audit trail, *and* are sent to the address the submitter specified. If they appear in the PR audit trail, this means that they *were* sent to the address of the submitter. If that address was misspelled, then those mails would bounce, but the messages would still appear in the audit trail.
