The 3.x version uses LUA, which makes 3.x incompatible with 2.x conf files. It would be nice to have a port for awesome 2.x. Unfortunately, I've been really slow to address this, and there have been multiple commits for the 3.x versions. If you can repocopy x11-wm/awesome -> x11-wm/awesome2, I'll roll them back to the 2.x states.
