If you're familiar with Linux, then FreeBSD's ports mechanism can seem inconvenient at first. If this applies to you, keep in mind that you can download updated packages and install them very much like RedHat Linux's RPM's. For the i386, you'd get them from ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-3-stable/ or a mirror near you. :-) Package filenames always end in .tgz and are installed with the pkd_add(1) command.
