I'm under the impression that the kernel is built from files under /usr/obj (see /usr/src/Makfile.inc1, down around line 427) but you're not likely to find a 'technical deep' explanation unless one of the 'lords from above' finds time to read questions@ soon. (No offense to any of said. This is a great bunch of folk.) My guess is that several of them do, but not too frequently, or else they set a filter that sends them only headers with certain subjects.
