Have you try to use other usb devices, such as a mouse? Does it work for you?

Are you using uhci or ohci?

I am having trouble with the usb in general on a Sony r505 TEK

Try to enable the usb debug options in the kernel and see if they report
anything stange. Mine returns uhci timeouts which I am still looking for more
info.
