What difference
  pub/FreeBSD/tools/
  pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.?-RELEASE/tools/

***

How about this.

tools/i386/  (real dir)
tools/alpha/ (real dir)
 releases/i386/4.?-RELEASE/tools/  -> ../../../../tools/i386/
 releases/alpha/4.?-RELEASE/tools/ -> ../../../../tools/alpha/

or

releases/i386/tools/  (real dir)
releases/alpha/tools/ (real dir)
  releases/i386/4.?-RELEASE/tools/  -> ../tools/
  releases/alpha/4.?-RELEASE/tools/ -> ../tools/
  tools/i386/   -> ../release/i386/tools/
  tools/alpha/  -> ../release/alpha/tools/
