I very often us Dia to construct the diagram and print it to a postscript 
file and then I use e.g. ps2pdf to convert that postscript file into a 
PDF. This works well for me as I send these to people on both M$ ans *nix 
boxes and everybody can ready it.

Takes a little fiddling with document and font sizes to get it right but 
the end result is usually good. I use this same tactic with distributing 
documents originally penned in OpenOffice and Applix as well.
