Did you complete an installation that now will not boot or did you simply copy the distribution files over to an MS-DOS parition? The booteasy boot manager is not specific to FreeBSD, nor is it required to boot FreeBSD. Installing from an MS-DOS partition should work, but if staying connected to your ISP overnight is a low-cost possibility, then you may want to consider downloading the lastest version of FreeBSD right over the Internet. This may allow you to get started with FreeBSD before dealing with the CD-ROM drive, and you get the added benefit of installing the latest release. Beware that Winmodems are not supported. Without knowing much about the computer you describe, I guess your CD-ROM drive is controlled by the matcd(4) device driver. This is not part of the GENERIC kernel in 4.x, but I don't remember whether or not it is linked into the 3.x GENERIC kernel. You could install from the MS-DOS partition or from FTP via the modem and then recompile your own kernel to support the CD-ROM drive.
