the freebsd installed (4.6-stable) ignores the request to leave the mbr alone and scribbles all over it when multiboot with WinXP on ntfs partition. this stops XP from being able to boot and needs a complete reinstall - the XP repair utilities do not correct problem (fixmbr/fixboot)

install WinXP in 5gb ntfs partition at start of disk, then install freebsd and choose to not install boot loader and leave mbr alone.
