If I remember right, they used the old AMD PC-Net chipset. This chipset (using the lnc driver) is not the best out there and is a crapshoot - it may work for you or it may not. Sun liked it well enough to embed it on the motherboards of their Sparcs which I think is why so many UNIX folk seem to have warm fuzzies for it, me I never had nothing but trouble from it.
