You'll find this discussed in the freebsd-questions archives. http://www.freebsd.org/search.html I seem to recall that it's possible but not as simple as some would hope, i.e., no conversion as such. But check what they said. Maybe there's a way to stay with MD5 passwords that would be easier than changing, depending on what programs are giving you a hard time.
