There are certainly pitfalls.

One possible path would be to upgrade from 3.2 to 3.5 in the normal way.
Then follow these instructions:
http://laa.zp.ua/doc/FreeBSD/3.5-4.x.upgrade.txt

I upgraded from 3.2-RELEASE to 4.1-STABLE successfully in the past using
this method.
