This is in the FAQ.

ELF is a format for binary executables. FreeBSD is switching to ELF.
FreeBSD used to use a format called "a.out" named for the filename that a
compiler would output by default.

Unless you are planning on upgrading very soon, you don't need to worry
about ELF. Yet...
