I ran some tests to get more detailed information. During these tests, I was running: FreeBSD assisi 5.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT #23: Sat Jan 11 17:19:32 PST= 2003 nick@assisi:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/ASSISI i386 I ran acpiconf -s [1-5] and noted the results: acpiconf -s 1: The backlight remains on; kernel messages about the pccard ethernet detaching; hard disk continues to spin; the power LED flashes once per second. When I press the power button, the backlight turns OFF, but the network card comes back up, the machine is network reachable, and the console is usable blind. acpiconf -s 2: A console message (see below) rejects this operation. acpiconf -s 3: The hard disk spins down; the backlight remains on, but the screen image dissolves slowly to solid white; the power LED flashes every 6 seconds or so. Upon pressing the power button, the screen image returns, and then the backlight turns off about 1/4 second later. Machine is reachable and console is usable blind. acpiconf -s 4: The machine goes to a formal-looking text mode warning that there is no suspend-to-disk partition (which is true); after about 10 seconds, the OS comes back up, the machine is network reachable, backlight turns off, etc. However, when I logged in and rebooted the machine, it dropped my connection but didn't actually reset. When I pushed the power button, the backlight turned back on, and I could see that FreeBSD had stopped waiting for vnlru. It did not move on after 60 seconds. Pushing the power button again turned off the machine. acpiconf -s 5: The machine appears to shut down gracefully. =20 S1 log messages: Jan 14 21:25:04 assisi kernel: tdkphy0: detached Jan 14 21:25:05 assisi kernel: miibus0: detached Jan 14 21:25:05 assisi kernel: xl0: detached Jan 14 21:25:05 assisi kernel: wakeup from sleeping state (slept 00:02:02) Jan 14 21:25:05 assisi kernel: ata0: resetting devices ..
