Message-ID: <20010508220146.B279@IPAustralia.Gov.AU> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, I am writing to ask if a GSM modem (Wavecom WM 02) could be used as a last-ditch means of contacting a site if that sites land lines (primary and backup) have been severed by a back hoe ? While the Wavecom modem answers a normal modem (the Wavecom presents an RS232 interface and responds to AT commands) or phone, there is no training sound nor does the modem go into data transfer phase. There is a getty listening to the device to which the Wavecom is connected to; I haven't looked at the RS232 signals from the modem when the call is answered; the Wavecom is quite happy to deliver data to a GSM provider using tip. Is this a stupid idea ? The devices are attractively priced and if they work in this role may save wondering|speculating|calling the police to determine if there has been a power failure|telco failure|natural disaster etc. Thank you, Yours sincerely. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stanley Hopcroft IP Australia Network Specialist +61 2 6283 3189 +61 2 6281 1353 (FAX) Stanley.Hopcroft@IPAustralia.Gov.AU ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 19) You are the pioneer type and hold most people in contempt.
