Nope, it sounds like you set it up perfectly...

You should start X-Windows by running 'startx', this runs a little script
which starts the X-Server (the bit your looking at on your system at the
moment), and also loads a couple of terminal windows - and more importantly
starts a 'window manager' (the part of the X-System that handles any windows
programs create etc.)

Try running 'startx' - if that still gives the same result let me know... If
it does give the same result try pressing both mouse buttons on the mouse
and see if you can get any menus...
