If you are trying to install from scratch on a laptop, and don't have a NetGear pccard card (or anything cardbus), then I'd suggest installing from the latest 4.0-stable snapshot rather than from 4.0 release. If you do have a netgear card, I'm sorry. Some of the newer ones just don't work yet and need a lot of help.
