I have 768MB RAM + 1.5GB swap and have never run out of RAM while
compiling OpenOffice.org. I am using gcj instead of Java though
(WITH_GNUGCJ=1) and this might decrease memory use. Be warned, however,
that compilation with gcj has been broken for a while and you should not
try it.

I always compile from within KDE.
