Hi everybody,

I recently bought the FreeBSD 3.2 distribution... complete with book and all
4 CD-roms from Walnut Creek.
About the last 7 hours I tried to install this excellent operating system. I
previously installed a 3.0 distribution on an different computer and now I
had to start all over...

The computer is a Pentium 133 with 16 Mb - 2 Hard Disks (1.2 Gb and 850 Mb)
No problem at all, i guess.
So I tried to dual boot it, together with Windows 98. Since it was
preinstalled, I kept Windows 98 on my C-drive and wanted to install FreeBSD
on the D-drive.

I booted with the 2 bootdisks (kernel and mfsroot)
Strangely in the book they told something about 'Uncompressing kernel...' I
never saw that, but nevertheless, the system booted.

First I tried to skip kernel configuration and continue installation
but a second time I started kernel configuration and deleted all conflicting
devices such as ethernet cards, which I don't have. Then I began a Novice
installation, created some space on my D-drive.

For the labels I generated something manually:
root ... about 40 Mb
swap... about 150 Mb
usr ... all the rest of the 850 Mb

They recommended in the book to place the /var file system in the /usr file
system. That's what I did.
I selected an X-user Distribution... no Des and no Ports Collection, (that's
for later on).
Then I started with Installing from a FreeBSD CD-Rom.
All went fine... until I got an error message.

When I switched to the /dev/ttyv1
I got some more information:

WD1S1A: hard error reading fsbn 34988 of 34912-35039 (wd1s1 bn 34988; cn 17
tn 11 sn 23) (status 59<rdy,seekdone,drq,err>error 40 <uncorr>)
vm_fault: pager read error, pid (cp)
cp: /kernel: bad address

So, then the installation stopped and I had to reboot...
Surprisingly, I've selected to install the bootmanager that was on the disk.
Windows 98 started to boot... I didn't even had a chance to select any OS.

What went wrong, and what can I do about it?

Greetz,

Kristof Peeters
