This drove me berserk too the first time I encountered it :) What mountd is trying to tell you is that you need to export the root of the filesystem, and then _mount_ the subtree you really want: i.e... /etc/exports /usr -alldirs -maproot=0 -network 123.123.123.0 on the client: mount nfsservername:/usr/subtree1/subtree2/finalsubtreeIreallyWanted Hope this makes sense...
