I've also tried installing an Adaptec 2940 (ahc) card and had similar lockups. Large disk copies between IDE and USB drives seemed to be OK. I've got some ASUS AP1400R servers with CUR-DLS motherboards that experience this. I can make one available for testing if there is any interest.
