well, the theory is that you don't.  We need to figure out why it doesn't work.
I need to see the output of "mptable -dmesg", either from a current UP kernel
or the previous working SMP kernel.

Also, did you remove ?SMP_TIMER_NC" from your config?  And did you change 
smptests.h in any way?
