Clearly, gdm requires that devel/gconf2 be installed. A quick look at the
Makefile for gconf2 does not seem to list it, but the USE_GNOME might pull =
it
in. Looks like it might be a bug in the port.

You should be able to get it working by installing the gconf2 package or the
port.

NOTE: I don't use gdm, so I can't really confirm anything other than that g=
dm
is looking for files and directories that are part of gconf2.
