Here's the screen section from my xorg.conf: Section "Screen" Identifier "Laptop_Panel" Device "ATI Radeon Mobility" Monitor "HP nc6230 LCD display" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 Modes "1400x1050" EndSubSection EndSection The "DefaultDepth 24" is the line that fixed things for me.
