The solution is so simple! :-) Probably, it should be mentioned the 
FreeBSD GNOME FAQ. Just for the record:
    Set 'filesystem' to 'vfat' in the drive tab in floppy drive 
properties page.

P.S. IMHO, desktop-oriented FreeBSD really needs mount command with 
filesystem autodetection feature
