Dear Andrew, I have tried the patch you've sent and it does indeed fix the problems for my NIC. It's building the world across NFS as we speak. I'll see how it's died when I get home tonight. :-) If I have the time I will try to see if this breaks things for my x86 box and let you know. Thank you for your input.
