Not wanting to forfeit my nearly year-old Toshiba Freecards, which were coming due soon, I went ahead and ordered a new Satellite 1800 S253. The notebook arrived this morning, and my (old) installation of 4.3-R went on without any difficulty. After building a kernel with apm(4), I gave the new kernel a go and tried an "apm -z" at a console prompt to see what might happen (no XFree86 yet). A short while later, I re-applied power, only to be informed that the resume had failed. Trying this with a kernel with the broken stat clock flag (0x20) produced the same results: resume failure. Output of apm(8) and dmesg(8) are provided below. The new kernel had support for pcm(4) compiled in, but came up unrecognized. I would appreciate any insights knowledgable readers might offer on support for APM and sound on this (newer) Toshiba model (e.g., does Toshiba now require a suspend-to-disk partition, since our 2-year-old 4030CDT works perfectly with 4.3-R).
