Taht woudl work, but only for testing purposes.  The SIR chips can
operate in serial mode.  I don't know if they can do IrDA over a
normal serial connection or not, but I do know that communications is
possible. 

FIR chipsets require drivers because they are much faster and have a
different API than the gold old 16550.
