Has anyone had this happen? I use a Matrox Mill > set to 1024 mode. Your .xsession file is probably broken. xdm runs your .xsession file, and when it exists it kills the X server.. So generally the last thing you put there is your window manager, and when you quit that the X server exits. If you changed it and can't get back in, enter your user name and password, but instead of hitting enter after your password, press F1.
