My group now all has Apacer HandyDisk USB disks (128 MB) and they worked flawlessly under both Windows and FreeBSD. umass recognized the device correctly without tweaking anything. I use sysinstall to re-partition into two slices, one FAT and one FreeBSD. Both are now working. Thanks again for the advice! (This is not an endorsement of Apacer or any of its products.
