Is there any way you can fix the dependent ports either not copy the 
documentation or optionally install it independently?

There is a trend to move e.g. DOXYGEN to it's own option, separate from 
docs, so what you did previously was welcome.

I'd vote for fixing those dependent ports and bringing the previous 
version back.
