Hm hm. Very strange. I have no idea what's going on there.
One thing you could try is to let your syslogd add "mark"
messages. These are logged at the "info" level, so you have
to add that level to your /etc/syslogd.conf. By default
they're logged every 20 minutes (you can change that with
the -m option).
Oh BTW, what are the contents of your /etc/newsyslog.conf
file? Anything unusual there?
