That's such an appalling kludge that, Emacs bigot though I be, I use
vi on such keyboards.

I think, in fact, that Garrett brought up the correct information.  I
had completely forgotten that I map Alt-L to Meta under X.  And
Ctrl-Meta-F2 and friends still work.  I just wish they wouldn't :-)
