I'm trying to install FreeBSD 4.0-Release (Compaq) using a parallel interface to a configured FreeBSD 4.0 system (NEC). I have the network up and running on an Ethernet LAN, but no Ethernet interface for the damn Compaq Laptop. (nor a cd-rom or RS232C-25 Pin serial or anything else remotely useful). But, the parallel interface just isn't working for me either. I have never done this before but I have a laplink cable and I figure it should work. Booting the Compaq Laptop with the 4.0 boot floppies I have ifconfig my host (NEC) to an address of 10.0.0.1 and the client (Compaq) to 10.0.0.2. In the /stand/sysinstall program I have attempted to configure the media as follows: Install from an FTP server ftp.freebsd.org || Specified ftp://209.155.82.20 lp0 Parallel Port IP peer connection host: compaq, domain: blank, Gateway 10.0.0.1, Name Server (my upstream cable name server ip address), IP Address 10.0.0.2, Netmask 255.255.255.0, extra options to ifconfig 10.0.0.1 On the emergency holographic shell ttyv4 I get the following confirmation when typing ifconfig lp0: lp0: flags=8810<POINTOPOINT,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet 10.0.0.2 --> 10.0.0.1 netmask 0xffffff00 On the debug console ttyv2 I get the following message: DEBUG: ifconfig lp0 inet 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 DEBUG: Adding default route to 10.0.0.1.add net default: gateway 10.0.0.1 Back on the host machine I get the following errors: routed[220]: bind(rip_sock): Address already in use routed[108]: bind(rip_sock): interface lp0 to 10.0.0.2 broken: in=0 ierr=4 out=0 oerr=2 I don't know what I am missing but the Compaq can not find ftp.freebsd.org 209.155.82.20.. What have I missed?
