Install KDE or GNOME or WindowMaker or something useful, and you will have a bit more luck. As root (before you bother with startx), try this: pkg_add -r windowmaker Then, edit your .xinitrc file (in your /root directory) to contain the following line: wmaker Then, try startx. I suggest WindowMaker because it is fairly lightweight, will not take a long time to install, and will give you the base functionality of a GUI without requiring you to do a lot of work.
