The classic console mailers in there are pine and elm, with mutt as a more modern development. Mutt is explained in great detail at http://www.mutt.org/ . To learn more about pine, http://www.washington.edu/pine/tutorial.4/ is a great tutorial. Elm is explained nicely in http://www.math.fu-berlin.de/~guckes/elm/ .
