Not surprising. It's the hardest part.

Mitchell> I have been following the readme for XFree86-3.1 and

I set my .cshrc path as:

  set path = ( /usr/X11R6/bin /usr/local/bin /usr/sbin /usr/bin /sbin . )

And in my .profile:

  PATH=/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:.; export PATH

Mitchell> A kluge has temporarily addressed this.

What's the kludge?

Probably, but xdm is itself quite a headache to configure. I've
attached to the bottom of this file the contents of my
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm directory. It's got xdm files configured in
such a way that it works on my FreeBSD host. You also just need to
add this line to /etc/ttys:

ttyv4 "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure

And then do `kill -1 1' to get init to reread the config files.

Mitchell> Thirdly, and this is where I am stuck, is that I cannot
Mitchell> get my mouse device type of COM port set up. I am using
Mitchell> COM3 I think ther is a reasom for this), but only have

When you boot up, does FreeBSD detect three different serial ports?
You can find this out by typing

	dmesg | grep ^sio

You should see entries for sio0, sio1, and sio2. If there's no sio2,
then COM3 won't be usable. What you need to do is tell FreeBSD what
the IRQ and port address of your sio2 port is.

If it is showing up, then the problem might be in the serial
communication between the mouse and XFree86. What kind of mouse is
it?

Anyway, here are the xdm files. This is a uuencoded, gzip'd tar file.
To extract, save this message to a file. Then type

        cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm
	tar xzvf file

This will overwrite your existing config files, so you might want to
back them up.
