In fact there was talk a while ago that FreeBSD might adopt the rc.d system as used by Linux and others for a future release (5.0 perhaps?). I'm not sure what the latest status is on this. Anyway, there clearly is merit in both systems, and the rc.d system is quite widely used, so which approach rightly deserves to be called 'mainstream' is probably up for debate :) Glad to have been of help, nonetheless.
